When hurricane Irma was messing up our lives a few weeks ago, my husband and I loaded up on some non-perishables that we wouldn’t normally purchase, in bigger quantities than we’d normally have. Like pretzels. And lots of nuts. And while we did our fair share of hurricane hoarded eating….we were left after the storm with too many of lots of stuff.
So what’s a girl to do with some random non-perishables? Get salty and semi-sweet and make a healthier trail mix snack for life. Ya with me?!

Snacks are a tricky thing. When I’m talking about diet plans (just how you eat not deprivation eating) with friends, I often encourage them to NOT snack. I’ve read all the different methods, diet plans, food trends, and health tips and the one that said snacking is totally NOT necessary is probably the one that both blew my mind and also simultaneously resonated with me.
NO SNACKING?! BUT WHY/HOW? Well, the idea behind this is… if you are eating healthful meals that are the right mix of proteins, healthy fats, greens and fiber (enter Fab4 here) you shouldn’t be feeling hungry between meals, having mega cravings and needing to snack. In fact if you are…. you may want to look back at the meals you are eating and reconfigure them a bit to make sure they are feeding your body well. If you are eating healthful meals, your essentially don’t need snacks which can easily cost you a few hundred calories a handful and add extra calories you otherwise didn’t need in the day.
The one time I think snacks are appropriate is the “bridge snack”. That often time between lunch and dinner, often before the gym when we nearly loss all will power at hand and eat anything and everything in our site and also skip the gym. The bridge snack serves as the little snack that will fuel your workout and help you get to dinner if its evening time but still a little bit away. THEN, I support a snack……but a good one……in a reasonable portion. One of my favorite bridge snacks are these protein muffins (seriously so yum) but this salty and sweet trail mix ain’t too shabby either. Just be thoughtful of your portion, don’t eat mindlessly out of the container and make sure to choose the healthiest version of the items you decide to make it up and you are solid.
And with those dried cranberries this is totally fall appropriate right?!
