We’ve all done it. Squeezed the last drop out of that foundation tube, held on to that crusty mascara, and hoarded questionable colored eye shadows and lipsticks from years ago because you never know when you just might need them (that blue eye shadow because what it there is an 80’s theme party y’all?!). You’ve Marie Kondo’d everything else in your life, and it’s time to take a hard look at your makeup line-up. But how long are your products really good for?
LIPSTICK
USE BY:
Lipsticks should be replaced after one year. So I’ll be throwing out approximately 10 immediately. How did I get here?!
REPLACE WITH:
- A lip sheer that has been called the “Gucci of chapsticks”
- A bold red that everyone needs
- Lead free lipstick that feels great going on
- This lip crayon that I bought recently and can’t stop wearing
MASCARA
USE BY:
Mascara can carry some pretty scary stuff if you’re not careful, so it’s best to replace every 3 months.
REPLACE WITH:
FOUNDATION
USE BY:
Foundations should be replaced after one year, if you haven’t used it up before then I’m curious what it’s still doing in your makeup bag. REALLY.
REPLACE WITH:
EYELINER
USE BY:
Pencil eyeliner can last up to two years with sharpening, while liquid eyeliner should be replaced every 3 months bc of the constant contact and potential for bacteria to build up.
REPLACE WITH:
BRUSHES
USE BY:
Depending on the quality and regular care, brushes can last anywhere from one year up to five years. Haven’t washed your brushes in a while? We will talk about THAT one in another blog post.
REPLACE WITH:
EYESHADOW
USE BY:
Remember the note above about washing your brushes? Yeah, that impacts the lifespan of your eyeshadows and the potential transfer or build up, but generally speaking powders can last up to two years and creams last one year.
REPLACE WITH:
SKINCARE
USE BY:
The majority of your skincare will have labeling on it telling you when it expires, but generally skincare products last anywhere from 12-24 months. Do your best to keep them safe by tightening lids, keeping them out of sunlight and avoiding putting your fingers into the tubs (thats why pumps are best!)
REPLACE WITH:
When is the last time you cleaned out your makeup haul?!
XO,
JESS
