Guess what day it is?! Guess what day it is?! It’s the day before we leave for SCOTLAND!! I cannot believe the day is almost here. Four years later, my husband and I are getting back to a city we absolutely love, as we have hoped to do, and this time my parents will get to join in on the fun. I am so thankful for the opportunity to take the time to go back to Edinburgh, Scotland and to show my parents the amazing country that Scotland is. If you read my 10 things about me, you know that my husband and I briefly lived there back in 2013. We always knew we wanted to get back, and put it on our bucket list for #beforebaby, so we are so stinking excited to be visiting again. In the spirit of my upcoming travels, I’m giving you my top tips for staying healthy on vacation. Because sometimes vacation equals leaving your health goals behind, but I’m here to tell you that doesn’t have to be. But how?! Girl, I got you.
1. DON’T SPLURGE EVERY MEAL
I know, vacation is vacation. Why shouldn’t I do whatever the heck I want? Well I’ve got a few reasons here….. First, you don’t want to completely throw off your health journey by eating everything covered in cheese you can find, because girl you’ve been working hard and as quick as you can gain a few lbs it will take 2-4 times to get it back off. Second – if you’re body isn’t used to eating a little richer it may come back to haunt you and you may get sick, and no one wants to spend a minute of their vacation sick. Third – there is still plenty of yummy food you can eat without “splurging” at every meal and it is really all about balance. So while I certainly encourage you to splurge a little, don’t splurge at every single meal because it will set you down a path that will be THAT much harder to break when you get back. Enjoy. Balance. And probably a little pasta.
2. EXPLORE THE CITY BY FOOT
Not only is this tip healthy and helps you burn a few calories, it’s also truly one of the best ways to explore an area when you are traveling. Sure that tour bus looks fun, but there’s nothing like walking the streets, passing by the locals and stopping into random shops and places that aren’t on the tourist track. Wear comfy shoes, and get out there on foot to get in some mileage for your health and enjoy your vacation.
3. PLAN FOR A OUTDOOR ACTIVITY
Whether it’s hiking, biking, swimming, mountain climbing, whatever it may be, try to plan for an outdoor activity that will get your heart rate up a bit and allow you to enjoy some of the beautiful scenery around you. We plan to do a hike at Hollyrood in Edinburgh that gives the absolute best view of the city. Workout AND an amazing view to top it off?! I’m telling you, plan for this and it may just be the highlight of your trip.
4. ENJOY THE “GYM” AROUND YOU
Take a look a the world a little differently around you to find ways you can workout in your surroundings. That beautiful park that loops? Your running track. Those stairs that seem to go forever? The ultimate stair master. Park bench? Tricep dips, step ups, I could go on. Make use of the things around you and make a little “gym” time on your vacay and you will totally feel better.
5. STAY HYDRATED
One of my favorite and the easiest tips for maintaining your health on vacation is making sure to stay hydrated. Because sometimes vacation means a few more libations than normal, you especially need to make sure you are drinking water and staying hydrated. Have water at every meal (even with your cocktail) and pack water on your day trips. This is an area I am certainly bad at during vacation so I’m going to make sure that H2O is my best friend during my trip. Anything you practice when traveling to stay healthy? I’d love to hear your tips below! XO,
JESS
